Kelly Slater and a week in the Hurley Pro sun
Ya, you can bet the contest was super fun! People watching’s at a premium. Characters abound! Like this guy with his tongue hanging out running behind Slater. He tried to befriend me by singing Clash songs. Kelly’s a big deal! He won it…again! He’s the Michael Jordan of the waves, I’d say. On days he surfs, the crowd is bigger and people follow him all over. Surfing is a cool sport, there’s nothing else like it and it all takes place against a gorgeous blue backdrop! There were dolphins galore. It was just like Sea World minus the nutty narration and the confined space. Way better… Awesome! I shoot most everything up close. This shot of Kelly was taken with my wide angle lens, po guy had to walk out around me to avoid the smack on the nose. haha..I thought I was standing back…no wonder he’s rockin’ the elevens across his brow. Oooops!

What a GREAT week!!
I started thinking about adding a lens or 2 and maybe even a new camera to my repertoire. I want to shoot more of the guys in the waves, get in a little closer. Like maybe a 400 zoom. I use my Nikon D80 like a point and shoot. I don’t know much about the controls but I know I want to get in closer. Let me know if you have any suggestions…I’d love to hear cuz I’m pretty sure what I’m talking about is a big purchase.

The dolphins were out in full force. Esp that whole pod of them int he picture. They were jumping right out of the water and surfing, too. Mamas and babies….it was fantastic!!! k.
