Who cares about flag day

I’ve seen flag day on the calendar my whole life but I’ve never done anything about it…until this year. You don’t see things like this much anymore. Our town sits on the north end of a huge marine base. We’ve adopted the 2/4 Marines. This was their Flag Day welcome home from a rough tour of duty in Afghanistan where they lost a few of their men. We all have our opinions about the what’s and why’s of our current military affairs and the fact remains…these are some BRAVE folks. I know some of their wives and kids, I see what the families sacrifice, it’s not easy. Honor is well deserved and we’re lucky to be able to celebrate it with them! I am known to shed a couple tears during events like this. Today was no exception. I was raised in an extremely patriotic family headed by a very gentle man who fought in world war 2 and experienced such extreme conditions that he never spoke of them. He would have stood on the sidelines of this parade in silent salute. A lot of us pulled our kids out of school, some classes were here on field trip. I hope these marines, at least for Flag Day 2012, saw their military commitment as more than just another thankless job. I love the human spirit! It’s true…Life’s what you make it!

Total “feel good” moment. Very nice. Thanks for a great post.
Oh Bren…you are welcome!!!
This is beautiful in every way. Props to you for celebrating this holiday in such a meaningful way. The photos leave such a strong impression.
Meghan, thanks!!! We felt lucky to be there and knowing their story gives me more respect for the marines I see hanging out in town. k.
Wish I’d been there! How many towns even think to do that anymore, whether they are by a military base or not. These men/women don’t get even a portion of the honor and thanks they deserve. A real parade in SC – I’m impressed! Thanks for sharing.
You would have loved it! I think it will pass up “job core” in my mental list of parade highlights! Tears, fo sho!
Goosebumps! Those brave men and women and their wonderful families deserve our thanks, encouragement, and support for sure! When we lived in Ventura, we were right by the base, too. It’s easier to remember their sacrifice when it’s in your face daily. Thanks for putting it out there- great pics (and sweet family!).
I felt the same, Bee! Lucky! Thanks! k.
Oh what a great write up Kimi, it got me! My heart goes to ALL that served especially to that Gentle man you mentioned. Thanks for a wonderful post!
You bet, babycakes!! I totally felt that way. Set aside all the skepticism and questions and see these people for what they are. Brave! k.
Great shots, Kimi.
Thanks!!! k.
